[2023] Tag: You're it! Why Are H1, H2, & H3 Header Tags Important For SEO?

GUESS WHAT? Your header tags do more than just change the size and font of your writing.

I see this all the time; header tags being used for everything EXCEPT SEO. Just by knowing what these tags actually do, you can have your site ranking on Google like you're a Walton.
 

Header tags are what we call on-page SEO. used to communicate to search engines what your website is about, knowing how to use them is a must when looking at marketing in 2021. It's simple: Google reads your header tags by order of priority.
 
 H1: Read as your most important words by Google. This should be your title. It is the main search query you want to come up for.  H2: Read as second in importance by Google. Usually used for subtitles.

H3: Third in line and is usually any connected keywords
 
 Now don't just throw a bunch of choices in there! You need to be strategic. You'll need both long-tail and short-tail keywords (Guess what? Covered this in a newsletter, too!).

As search engines crawl your site, they will pick up on the headers and recognize the keywords you are using as important.

While your header tags do extend to h4, h5, and h6, we’re only going to focus on the first three since these are the tags that carry the most SEO value. Header tags have their own place on a page and have to be used in a proper order starting with your h1.

The H1 tag should contain your targeted keywords, ones that closely relate to the page title, and are relevant to your content.

The H2 tag is a subheading and should contain similar keywords to your h1 tag.

Your H3 is then a subheading for your h2 and so on.

Think hierarchy: the most important should be above the lesser. Thank the universe I am talking about words. This would be awkward, otherwise.

Keep in mind that it’s also very important that your header tags are readable and grammatically correct. Stuffing your h1, h2, and h3 with keywords is not going to help your cause. If anything, Google will recognize this and assume you are trying to manipulate them — don't be that company.

See what I did there? Only 1 H1, which is my title. Every H2 reinforces my title and is reinforced by, you guessed it, my H3's.
